It is ok to change your mind: Introducing Freia Laser Tattoo Removal

Laser tattoo removal is the gold standard treatment of choice given its safety and effectiveness. Tattoos have become increasingly popular in Asia, and correspondingly, tattoo-removal requests have also increased as patients’ personal identities advance. Tattoos may put a strain on interpersonal relationships, affect employment opportunities or simply grow out of fashion. Other times, we have patients who request to lighten their existing tattoos so as to put on a new tattoo design. The reasons for wanting to remove a tattoo are endless, and we are here to help.

How does laser tattoo removal work?

Tattoos are removed by directing laser energy at the tattooed area in very short pulses, passing through the outer layer of the skin and directly targeting the tattoo ink. The laser selectively destroys the tattoo ink. Over the next few weeks, the body’s scavenger cells remove pigment residues, resulting in lightening of the tattoo.

What kind of laser is used?

We have a few tattoo removal lasers in our clinic but the new generation Picosure laser is now available. We also have the Medlite C6 Q-switched Nd-yag laser to remove tattoos. At Freia, our full range of lasers mean that we can treat even the most challenging of tattoo colours and sizes.

I’m worried that tattoo removal would leave bad scars. How true is that?

Earlier methods in tattoo removal involved the use of crude and painful dermabrasion, salabrasion (using coarse table salt and a moist abrasive pad), surgery and CO2 lasers, but these procedures had a much higher risk of scarring, which may have been worse than having the tattoo itself. Under our care, most tattoos are effectively removed with little risk of scars. The art of laser tattoo removal is to remove the tattoo as quickly as possible, but at the same time do it safely without scarring.

Is The Tattoo Removal Process Painful?

A topical anaesthetic cream is routinely applied for 20 minutes prior to treatment. Zimmer cool air protects the treatment area and increases comfort levels throughout the laser treatment. There is some discomfort during the procedure, but it is usually very well tolerated. Patients describe the sensation of a rubber band snapping on the skin. Upon request (usually for larger tattoos) you can also take oral painkillers before the tattoo removal treatment. We will discuss these options with you.

How long does each treatment take?

Usually only a few minutes, but this depends on the size and number of colours on the tattoo.

Is tattoo removal safe?

Tattoo removal is a low-risk, outpatient procedure. Side effects are predictable and minimal. Rarely, patients may experience blistering or pin-point bleeding, but this normally heals within 1 week.

How long will it take before I can return to work?

Most patients can return to work the same day or the next day following their treatment.

How many treatment sessions will it take to remove the tattoo?

Professional tattoos may require 6 to 10 treatments upwards. Amateur tattoos usually require 2 to 4 treatments upwards. All treatments are spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart. The number of treatments needed depend on the amount and density of the ink, the type and the depth of the ink in the skin, the location of the tattoo, and the patient’s individual skin type (Kirby-Desai Tattoo Removal Scale). After each treatment, the tattoo becomes progressively lighter. With the Picosure laser, this have been reduced to half the original number of sessions required, and even stubborn tattoos have shown to respond very well.

What is the time interval between treatment sessions?

We usually like to space the treatment sessions 4 to 6 weeks apart. This gives your body time to digest the fragmented ink pigments to be removed by your body’s natural processes. In order to achieve your goals, we suggest getting started on the tattoo removal treatment as soon as possible.

How much will removing my tattoo in Singapore cost?

Do all colors of ink respond to laser treatment equally?

Dark blue, black and red inks are the easiest to treat. Orange, yellow, and purple usually respond moderately well. Green, sky-blue inks are the most difficult to remove, but with the latest Picosure 755nm laser, even these colours can be effectively removed quickly. White and pink tattoos usually respond poorly.

Will the tattoo completely disappear?

Most of the time, yes. However, it is very important to know that over 100 tattoo inks are in use worldwide. Not knowing which tattoo ink, how deep or how much was used, makes it difficult to predict with 100% certainty. The Kirby-Desai scale gives a good estimation of number of sessions required.

What can I expect post-treatment?

A healing cream and a water-proof dressing will be applied to the area. The treated area should be kept clean with continued application of cream prescribed. Some patients like to ice the area with cold packs or frozen peas. You can shower on the same day, although the treated area should not be scrubbed or scratched and it should be shielded from the sun. The tattoo will start to fade after a few weeks.

Are there any side effects of tattoo removal?

Side effects of laser procedures are generally few but may include hyperpigmentation, or an abundance of color in the skin at the treatment site, and hypopigmentation, where the treated area lacks normal skin color. On occasion, blisters may form on the treated area, but this goes away in less than a week. Other possible side effects include infection of the site, lack of complete pigment removal and a less than 5 percent chance of permanent scarring (keloids, etc). The vast majority of patients report having no side effects.
