Sweating is a natural phenomenon in humans. In some, natural perspiration is excessive, leading to a condition known as hyperhidrosis. The most common areas where excessive sweating occurs is in the hands, underarms, feet and face.
Uncontrollable sweating on the palms may cause severe psychological, social and professional distress. Difficulty in handling paper, writing (blotching, smearing), buttoning, using electronic equipment and fear of shaking hands are commonly reported. The incidence of hyperhidrosis of the palms affect up to 2% of young adults. The cause of this condition is due to over-activity of the nervous system.
Botulinum Toxin injections can be effectively used to treat hyperhidrosis of the palms and underarms, avoiding the need for surgery (known as Video Assisted Thoraco-sympathectomy or VATS). The procedure is done under a local anaesthetic cream or nerve block. There is no down time and results generally last 6 months. Anecdotal evidence suggests that repeat treatments may have a permanent effect of reducing sweat activity.
