Who is it For?
Ideal for both men and women experiencing mild to moderate hair thinning, this technique also caters to those who prefer to maintain longer hairstyles throughout their journey. Unlike traditional methods, Long Hair FUE allows patients to keep their hair length intact during and after the procedure, making the transition virtually unnoticeable.
Whether you're attending meetings, social events, or simply going about daily life, this treatment ensures you can continue to look and feel like yourself — while working towards a fuller, natural-looking head of hair in the background.
Non-shaven/Long Hair FUE vs. Standard FUE - what’s the difference?

Why is Long Hair FUE more challenging?
It is important to highlight that Long Hair FUE is typically more difficult than shorter hair FUE for the following reasons:
- Increased Hair Length: Managing long hair requires careful parting and thinning to access the follicles without damaging surrounding strands. Longer hair typically obstructs the doctor's view and makes follicle extraction more challenging.
- Tension and Grease: Longer hair can create additional tension during the extraction process, making it harder to isolate follicles cleanly. Also, longer hair can trap oils and debris, which can sometimes complicate follicle identification and handling.
- Greater Distraction: Long hair can sometimes obscure the working area, increase the risk of follicle trauma, or lead to accidental cutting or damage during extraction.
- Complexity of Precision: Extracting follicles without transecting (cutting) them requires meticulous technique. Longer hair increases the difficulty in maintaining the angle and appropriate depth, demanding higher skill from the surgeon.
- Time-Consuming Process: The process tends to take longer, as more care is needed to handle long hair, reducing efficiency and increasing the overall duration of the procedure.
In essence, Long Hair FUE is a technically demanding procedure that requires heightened precision, meticulous handling, and an experienced hand to preserve the integrity of each follicle. The complexity lies in navigating the longer hair strands without compromising accuracy — from careful parting and thinning, to extracting each graft at the correct angle and depth without damaging surrounding follicles.
This level of detail is not easily mastered, which is why it’s essential to entrust your procedure to a skilled and specialised team. Frequently asked questions
The procedure takes longer than traditional FUE due to its detailed and delicate nature.
Discomfort is minimal with local anesthesia. Most patients resume daily activities within 1–2 days, though strenuous exercise should be avoided for a week to support healing
Consultation & CustomisationYour journey begins with a personalised consultation and hairline design, tailored to your facial features and hair goals. No shaving of donor or recipient areas is needed.
Step-by-Step Procedure
Local AnaesthesiaMild anaesthesia is injected into the donor area. Most patients report little to no pain and typically do not require painkillers post-op.
Follicular ExtractionUsing Dr. Harold Ma’s Long Hair FUE technique, follicles are extracted with ultra-fine instruments (<1mm). The random micro-wounds are well-hidden among existing hair, leaving no visible marks unless shaved very short.
Graft InspectionGrafts (containing 1–4+ follicles) are examined under magnification, sorted, and stored in temperature-controlled solutions for optimal survival.
Break TimeYou’ll have a lunch and restroom break.
Site CreationDr. Ma determines graft placement, ensuring the correct angle, direction, and density for natural-looking results. Singles are used for hairlines; doubles/triples for volume.
No-Touch ImplantationGrafts are carefully implanted using our "no-touch" technique, which protects hair bulbs for better growth and less trauma.
Scalp CareScalp is cleaned and bandaged for 24 hours to protect grafts.
Post-Op Day 1Bandage is removed, grafts are inspected, and a professional hair wash is done, followed by laser therapy to speed up healing.
How many sessions will I need?
Most patients require only one session for mild to moderate hair loss. Severe cases may benefit from additional sessions spaced several months apart.
What about post-treatment care?
Post operative recovery care is similar to traditional FUE. A special self-foaming gentle shampoo is provided, along with the recovery sprays and serums. Some patients find it takes more effort to wash and dry the long hair compared to individuals who shaved their hair short. Like any form of hair transplant surgery, exercise and excessive sweating should be avoided for at least 1 week.
Contra-indication or known risks
Hair transplant surgery is generally considered low risk when performed skillfully. As with any surgical procedure, infection is a potential risk, though this is rare. Some patients might experience ingrown hairs. Others may undergo temporary shedding in the recipient or donor areas. A significant consideration is with regard to surgical technique and planning; Dr Ma will consider the final outcome across time as poorly done cases may look unnatural as the patient ages or experiences further hair loss.
