Penile Issues: Curved Penis

Spread the love

What is penile curvature, and how common is it?

Penile curvature refers to a bend in the penis when erect. Not all erect penis are completely straight; some degree of curvature is natural and relatively common in many men. However, a significant bend or symptoms may be a sign of a medical condition like Peyronie's disease.

What’s the difference between a naturally curved penis and Peyronie’s disease?

A naturally curved penis is known as congenital curvature of the penis. This is usually present since teenage years, is painless or asymptomatic, does not progressively worsen and the curve is usually smooth and gentle.

Peyronie's disease on the other hand is an acquired condition - meaning that the penis was not particularly curved, but may suddenly present later in life. This is usually symptomatic with pain, potentially some shortening and some patients may feel a lump or hardening of the penile tissue in an area.

What causes a penis to curve?

Congenital curvature is considered a natural variation in penile anatomy that a person is born with.

Peyronie's Disease is believed to result from minor injury or repetitive trauma to the penis, which causes inflammation. This inflammation then leads to improper wound healing and scar tissue formation. When the scar tissue is more prominent on one side of the penis, the affected side is not able to expand like it used to, resulting in a bend. It may be associated with connective tissue disorders as well.

Is penile curvature always a medical problem?

Mild or congenital curvature that does not affect sexual function or cause pain is not considered a medical problem. However, if the curvature is symptomatic and causes pain during erections or sexual activity, or if it impairs erections/intercourse or if it is associated with penile shortening - this is now a medical problem which should be addressed.

Can a curved penis get worse over time?

Congenital curvature is stable and should not worsen over time. Peyronie’s disease on the other hand may get progressively worse with time.

How do I know if my curved penis is abnormal?

If the curve is mild, not progressively worsening, is asymptomatic and there is no difficulty with erections or sexual function, then it is most likely normal. If the opposite is present, then please do get evaluated by a doctor.

Can penile curvature cause pain or discomfort?

Yes it can, particularly when caused by Peyronie's disease. Pain during erections is a common symptom, especially in the early phase of the disease.

Will a curved penis affect my sexual performance or erections?

It may. A significant curve, pain and reduced rigidity may make intercourse difficult, painful, or even impossible. This can also lead to anxiety or distress which can worsen sexual performance.

Can it lead to fertility problems?

Generally, penile curvature does not cause infertility. However, severe curvature or associated erectile dysfunction may interfere with vaginal penetration, consequently affecting a couple's ability to conceive naturally.

When should I see a doctor about penile curvature?

If it is symptomatic, or affecting your sexual life please see a doctor about it.

What tests or scans are used to diagnose Peyronie’s disease?

Diagnosis is done clinically with a history and physical exam. Occasionally we do order up a penile ultrasound to evaluate any plaque or calcification.

Can penile curvature be self-diagnosed at home?

After reading this article, you should be well versed with the symptoms of penile curvature. If you need help confirming the diagnosis or need treatment, we are always here to help with that as well.

Are there non-surgical treatments available?

Yes there are. In the acute phase of Peyronie's disease, treatment options include

  • Penile traction therapy to helps reduce curvature and prevent length loss

  • Oral or injectable medications may help but effectiveness varies

  • Surgery is not recommended during this phase

In the chronic phase, after symptoms stabilize, treatment options include

  • Penile injections

  • Traction therapy

  • Surgery (for persistent or severe curvature)

When is surgery recommended, and what are the risks?

Surgery is typically recommended for men with severe, disabling curvature that prevents sexual activity, and whose condition has been stable for some time. As with any surgery, there are risks, which can include shortening, sensation changes, or recurrence. This should be discussed in detail with your surgeon.

How effective are treatments, and can the penis be straightened fully?

The effectiveness of treatment varies. Some men see improvement without any treatment at all. Non-surgical options like traction therapy can improve length and curvature. Surgery is generally the most effective way to straighten the penis, but complete straightening is not always possible, and there are associated risks.

Can anything be done at home to manage or improve symptoms?

Penile traction therapy is a key management strategy that can be done at home under a doctor's supervision. Following your doctor's advice and monitoring your symptoms are also crucial parts of at-home management. Managing conditions like diabetes, smoking, and blood pressure to improve vascular health

Are there ways to prevent penile curvature from worsening?

Early diagnosis and treatment are key. Starting treatments like penile traction therapy in the early phase of Peyronie's disease may help prevent the condition from progressing. Avoiding trauma to the penis during sexual activity may also help.
