Exploring the Science Behind Ultherapy Prime: From Ultrasound to Skin Rejuvenation

Ultherapy Prime is a non-invasive treatment skin tightening device that uses focused ultrasound energy to lift and tighten the skin.

1. How does Ultherapy Prime compare to traditional facelift surgery in terms of structural lifting and tissue tightening?

While Ultherapy Prime provides significant skin-tightening benefits, it does not replace a surgical facelift in cases of severe skin laxity. Ultherapy Prime and traditional facelift surgery serve similar goals; to lift and tighten sagging skin, but they achieve these results in very different ways.

  • Ultherapy Prime: This non-invasive treatment uses microfocused ultrasound energy to target deep layers of the skin (the SMAS layer, which is also targeted in facelifts) without any surgical incisions or downtime. The ultrasound energy causes skin tightening and stimulates collagen production, leading to gradual lifting and tightening over the following 2–3 months. While the results are less dramatic than surgery, Ultherapy Prime is ideal for patients seeking a non-surgical option with minimal risk and no downtime.

  • Traditional Facelift Surgery: This is an invasive procedure that involves making incisions, removing excess skin, and tightening underlying tissues. It provides immediate and dramatic results but comes with risks like scarring, infection, and a longer recovery time.

2. How does Ultherapy Prime differ from other ultrasound-based skin treatments in terms of depth and precision?

Ultherapy Prime stands out from other ultrasound-based treatments due to its precision and customizable depth.

  • Depth: Ultherapy Prime can target multiple layers of the skin, including the superficial dermis, deep dermis, and the SMAS layer (the same layer addressed in surgical facelifts). This is achieved through the use of different transducers which focus the ultrasound energy into a specific depth of the skin.

  • Precision: The device uses real-time imaging to visualize the different layers of the treatment area, ensuring that the energy is delivered precisely to the intended depth. This minimizes the risk of damage to surrounding tissues and maximizes results.

Time-tested: Ultherapy Prime is the original micro-focused ultrasound technology with real-time imaging. With millions of treatments done in more than 80 countries and over 10 years of continuous usage, Ultherapy is a name many trust.

3. What is the role of collagen stimulation in Ultherapy Prime, and how does it differ from other collagen-boosting treatments like microneedling?

For Ultherapy Prime, the focused ultrasound energy creates controlled thermal injury at specific depths (up to 4.5mm deep), triggering the body’s natural healing response. The target is the SMAS layer. The heat stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin, leading to firmer, tighter skin over time. The results are gradual but long-lasting.

For Microneedling, the treatment uses tiny needles to create micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating collagen production primarily in the more superficial skin. Microneedling does not reach the deeper layers of the skin, and no heat is involved, unlike in Ultherapy Prime.

4. Does Ultherapy Prime work on areas with extreme skin laxity, such as post-weight loss skin, or is it more suited for mild to moderate sagging?

Ultherapy Prime is most effective for mild to moderate skin laxity. For patients with extreme sagging, such as after significant weight loss, the results may be less dramatic compared to surgical options like a facelift or body lift.

5. What measures are in place to ensure that Ultherapy Prime does not cause hyperpigmentation or other pigmentation irregularities in darker skin types?

Ultherapy Prime is generally safe for all skin types, including darker skin tones, because it uses focused ultrasound energy to cause bulk heating of the skin in a specific layer, and not light energy (as in lasers)

The target for laser treatments is usually the melanin (or water or hemoglobin) in the skin. When the target is melanin, or a lot of inflammation is involved, there is a risk of pigmentary change.

There is still some amount of inflammation of the skin post-Ultherapy, so proper aftercare, including sun protection, is also recommended to minimize risks of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)

6. Can Ultherapy Prime be used on patients who are taking certain medications, such as blood thinners or corticosteroids, without compromising treatment safety or efficacy?

The concern with patients taking certain medications is that it may affect the safety and/or efficacy of the treatment.

With blood thinners, we are concerned about bruising, which can be a side effect of Ultherapy. With corticosteroids, the skin’s healing capacity is decreased, which may affect the efficacy of the treatment.

Ultherapy Prime is a non-invasive treatment, so it is generally safe for most patients. It is important to discuss your suitability with your doctor. We may consider delaying treatment until the medication is adjusted.

7. Can Ultherapy Prime be safely used for delicate areas like the under-eye region, or are there limitations to its use in such sensitive areas?

Yes, Ultherapy Prime can be used on delicate areas like the under-eye region. The skin at the under eye region is thinner, so in general, we do not use the deep transducers for this area. We may also adjust the energy levels.

One of the features of Ultherapy Prime is the real-time ultrasound visualisation. When we perform an ultrasound of the undereye area, we will decide the most suitable transducer to use to ensure safety and efficacy.

Having said that, patients with very thin skin or severe under-eye bags may not see significant improvement and may need other treatments.

8. How does Ultherapy Prime affect people with acne-prone skin or those with a history of acne or active breakouts?

Ultherapy Prime is generally safe for acne-prone skin.

If we note any active breakouts, treatment can still be performed, but it’s best to avoid those areas.

For patients with acne scars, Ultherapy Prime can improve skin texture over time, even though Ultherapy Prime is not specifically designed to treat acne scars. Ultherapy Prime is able to stimulate the dermis, and can potentially improve atrophic acne scars over time. Combining it with other treatments like microneedling with radiofrequency or laser therapy will result in better outcomes.
