In recent years, picosecond lasers are gaining momentum steadfastly as a popular aesthetics option for pigment correction and skin rejuvenation. In particular, the Picosure laser by Cynosure stands out as the “OG” of picosecond lasers so to speak, being the world's first picosecond laser to receive FDA approval for the removal of unwanted tattoos and benign pigmented lesions. By helping individuals overcome the emotional and psychological impact of skin imperfections and tattoo regret, the Picosure is a strong player in the field of Aesthetics medicine that’s poised to stay. Besides the maker of the machine and the skills and expertise of the physician who administered it, the success of a laser treatment rests largely on how well you take care of your skin post treatment. Here are 5 top tips on post Picosure laser care, detailing the dos and don’ts to help transform your complexion from drab to fab.

Tip #1: Adequate sun protection
Your doctor would have taken all possible precautions to avoid post inflammatory hyperpigmentation or PIH, possibly the most dreaded side effect of a picosure laser treatment. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a condition in which an injury or inflammation to the skin causes increased pigment production. The most common cause of PIH is acne, but it also can result from psoriasis, a burn, or a “controlled injury” situation of any laser treatment. It is therefore judicious to observe strict and adequate sun protection post picosure laser to optimize the outcome of the treatment you underwent. Avoid unnecessary direct sun exposure for at least 4 weeks, so plan your daily routine and errands as best as you can to avoid the strongest mid-day sun rays from 10am to 3pm. If you are toying with the idea of a beach vacay, it is probably wise to postpone it for a month or so.
Opt for a broad spectrum sunscreen like Crystal Tomato’s Beyond Sun Protection that protects not just against UVA and UVB but visible blue light as well. Recent studies have shown a strong correlation between blue light exposure and the worsening of skin pigmentation, especially so in cases of melasma. Tinted sunscreens like Ayuna’s Velo can be effective in blocking all UV rays due to the zinc oxide and titanium dioxide in the formulations that not only give a more flawless finish but can often protect the skin better than non-tinted variants. When outdoors for extended periods, one can opt for an oral sunscreen supplement like Heliocare Ultra for enhanced protection. Note that oral supplements do not replace the use of topical sunscreens - they add to the protection and are not a case of “one or the other”. Do not undermine the efficacy of additional protective items such as an umbrella and a wide brimmed hat or sun visor like Bluestone Sun Visor while heading outdoors too. All these little sun protective habits add up for better end results for sure!
And in case, you are wondering if there is a “Best Sunscreen” - we will tell you that it is the one that you would use - in sufficient quantities (i.e at least 2 fingers worth; if not 3). Applying too modest an amount (eg. a pea sized or a droplet) of sunscreen will not provide adequate protection. When it comes to sun protection, “more is more”.

Tip #2: Avoid harsh products
If your daily skincare routine includes retinol, AHAs, hydroquinone or other strong ingredients, hold off using them for at least 5 to 7 days post picosure laser. When your skin is recovering from a professional laser treatment, it is generally more sensitive and any sort of harsh ingredients can do more harm than good. You should be using a gentle cleanser on your treated skin and hang on to exfoliants for the time being. To err on the safe side, do check with your attending physician on any skincare product that you are unsure of. Gradually reintroduce your usual skincare routine under the supervised guidance of your professional skincare specialist.

Tip #3: Ensure adequate hydration but don’t go overboard
Any laser treatment can disrupt the skin’s natural moisture barrier which acts as an important shield that protects your skin from damage. Your skin might be drier and a tad more sensitive for a week or two post picosure laser. It is therefore necessary to keep it well hydrated, replenishing moisture and creating an environment conducive to healing with a non irritating moisturizer like Cream Extreme 1 that does not clog pores. Use hydrating masks like Freia’s Ultra Soothing Biocellulose Mask or Exquisite’s Dual Hydration Mask to keep skin ultra nourished and hydrated. Most people will notice that their skincare products get absorbed more quickly than usual, and the natural tendency will be to slather on more. Before you know it, you will end up applying much more than what your skin needs. Overhydration, especially with products that are too rich, can result in clogged pores, comedones and acne breakout in individuals that are more sensitive or have acne prone skin. To hasten recovery and optimize the outcome of your picosure laser treatment, consider layering on a recovery serum such as Calecim or Venn’s Cica Complex Biome Booster. For those who are prone to acne, Future Beauty Drop 3 (BD3) is an excellent choice to hydrate and accelerate healing at the same time.

Tip #4: Do not pick or peel
As much as you are tempted to do so, it is not advisable to pick, peel or scratch the treated area. By doing so, it disrupts the healing process and can lead to delayed recovery, PIH or even scarring. Avoid applying pressure or rubbing and allow any scabs or dead skin cells to naturally shed off without interference.

Tip #5: Good dietary & lifestyle habits
A holistic approach goes miles to help you get the most out of your picosure laser treatment. Ensure adequate hydration and a diet rich in protein and essential vitamins and minerals to support your healing process from within. A healthy diet and good skincare regimen can take you pretty far when it comes to keeping your skin beautiful, but we could all use a little help here and there, and oral supplements are an easy way to support your already healthy habits.
The effects of picosure laser can pay rewarding dividends for the future if you continue to practice good skincare habits. Wearing a good sunscreen and avoiding tanning beds can help to prevent pigmentation and fine lines from returning to a recently treated face. Continuing to moisturize after full recovery is a prudent step to keep lasered skin healthy and supple. Other lifestyle changes like incorporating more antioxidant rich foods and health supplements, adequate eye shut and regular exercise can help boost collagen production to extend the benefits of your picosure laser program.
